Div. 6 FMDRS rolls through Mission again

06/20/01

Mission Raceway Park will host a round of the NHRA Federal-Mogul Drag Racing Series, June 22-24, 2001. The event is the third of six in the NHRA's Northwest Division and will feature more than 400 cars, including 250-mph Federal-Mogul Dragsters and Federal-Mogul Funny Cars. It is also the second of two events to be held at Mission Raceway Park.

Drivers in eight categories - Federal-Mogul (FM) Dragster, Federal-Mogul (FM) Funny Car, Competition, Super Stock, Stock, Super Comp, Super Gas and Super Street - will compete for points leading to national and divisional championships. They will also run for a share of the $138,935 event purse.

Early in the season when four-time defending Federal-Mogul Dragster national champion Rick Santos chose to claim the Northwest Division as his home territory over the Pacific Division, a lot of people thought he would walk away with the division title. However, Mark Hentges had other thoughts and the early season lead in Federal-Mogul Dragster belongs to the Federal Way, Wash., resident. Hentges won the division's first two events and also has two wins in Southeastern Division competition as well as a win in four final round appearances at NHRA national events. Although Santos has three national event wins, he didn't win his first divisional race until last month in Sacramento, Calif.

On the Federal-Mogul Funny Car scene, Fife, Wash., resident Bucky Austin claimed wins in the division's first two events. Austin also has two national event wins to his credit. Larry Miner was the runner-up at the Federal-Mogul event at Firebird Raceway and Bucky's nephew, Pat Austin, came in second at the first Mission race.

Gates at Mission Raceway Park open at 7 a.m. each day. Qualifying and time trials begin at 8:30 a.m. Friday and Saturday. FM Dragsters and FM Funny Cars are scheduled to make one qualifying run on Friday, beginning at 3 p.m. Saturday, the two classes will make two passes each beginning at noon and 4 p.m. Eliminations begin at 9 a.m. Sunday, with Dragster and Funny Car eliminations starting at noon. General admission is $10 Friday, $20 Saturday and $20 Sunday. Pit passes are free on Friday and $5 Saturday and $5 Sunday. Children 12 and under are admitted free when accompanied by a paying adult.
