Jones, Simonian, Roberts, Nealy take national titles
Jackie Jones (Super Pro), Mark Simonian (Pro), Kyle Roberts (Sportsman), and Roy Nealy Jr. (Super Pro Motorcycle) were crowned the 2005 NHRA Summit Racing Series national champions after outlasting competitors in their respective fields during the NHRA Summit Racing Series National Championship, held in conjunction with the Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA Finals at Pomona Raceway. The event featured the champions from each division's NHRA Summit Racing Series Finals.
Division 4 champion Jones earned top honors in Super Pro by defeating Division 1's Chris Reynolds. Division 7 runner Simonian defeated Division 2 champ Rod Johnson to earn the Pro title. In Sportsman, Division 2's Roberts made the tow from St. Petersburg, Fla., pay off when he bettered Division 7 competitor Ray Baumgardner, and Nealy, also from Division 2, beat Division 5's Donnie Durenberger in the Super Pro Motorcycle final.
Each winner received $5,000, a jacket, champion's trophy, and NHRA Gold Card. All qualifiers were guaranteed a minimum of $3,500.
Prior to the on-track activities, the 28 division champions were welcomed to the event during a special banquet and ceremony held Nov. 3 at The Wally Parks NHRA Motorsports Museum in Pomona. Competitors were welcomed by Summit's Kirk Keinbuch and Don Lower; NHRA's Graham Light, Gary Darcy, John Covarrubias, Adriane Ridder, and Glen Cromwell; and racers Greg Anderson, Dan Fletcher, Jason Line, and Craig Treble. NHRA's Johnny Moto was the event emcee. Also at the ceremony, Anderson, Fletcher, Line, and Treble conducted a random drawing to determine qualifying positions for the race. The No. 1 driver on the ladder received a first-round bye, and pairs were made of the second and fifth drivers, third and sixth, and fourth and seventh.
