Event preview:FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Maple Grove to host NHRA Northeast Division opener
READING, Pa. - NHRA's Northeast division will open its 2003 Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series season at Maple Grove Raceway with a three-day event May 23-25. The race is the first of seven in Northeast division competition and will feature more than 500 drivers in eight categories competing for points leading to divisional and national titles as well as a share of the $561,000 champion's purse.
Classes that will run include 260-mph Top Alcohol Dragster (TAD) and Top Alcohol Funny Car (TAFC) as well as Comp Eliminator, Super Stock, Stock, Super Comp, Super Gas, and Super Street.
The Northeast division has had its share of NHRA national champions, including eight-time Top Alcohol Funny Car champ Frank Manzo. In 2002, the Morganville, N.J., racer earned his sixth straight title.
Manzo dominated the division last year winning six out of the seven events as well as four NHRA national events. So far this season, Manzo has been to one race - the national event in Houston - where he was runner-up to longtime rival Bob Newberry of Schenectady, N.Y.
Look for the Manzo/Newberry rivalry to heat up this season. Newberry has found some consistency and has won the two national events he's attended. He is currently eighth in the national point standings. Manzo is working with a brand new car and it could take some time to perfect the tune-up, however, he did make that final-round appearance at the only race he's attended.
The reigning Top Alcohol Dragster national champion is also from the Northeast division. Arthur Gallant won the title after a yearlong battle with Duane Shields of Las Vegas. The Boxboro, Mass., resident also claimed his first division title in 2002. En route to the championships, Gallant won four divisional races and two national events.
To this point, Gallant has been to an out-of-division race in Gainesville, Fla., where he suffered a first-round loss, and to the national event in Gainesville, where he advanced to the semifinals.
Typically, there are an abundance of quality TAD teams competing in the Northeast division but at this early date it remains to be seen who will challenge Gallant for the division title.
Gates at Maple Grove Raceway open at 8 a.m. each day. Qualifying and time trials begin Friday at 9:30 a.m. with TAD and TAFC running at 6 p.m. The action continues Saturday at 8:30 a.m. TAD and TAFC will run a final qualifying round at 1:30 p.m. and run all rounds of eliminations starting at 5 p.m. Eliminations for all other categories begin Sunday at 8 a.m.
General admission tickets, including pit pass, are $15 Friday, $22 Saturday and $20 Sunday. A two-day (Saturday/Sunday) ticket is $40 and a three-day ticket is $50. Children 6 to 11 are $8 Friday and $10 each Saturday and Sunday. A two-day child's ticket is $15 and a three-day pass is $25. Children 5 and under are admitted free.
