Sunday Eliminations:FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Washington racers take seven of eight
Kent, Wash. - Washington racers won seven of the eight NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series racing categories at Pacific Raceways during today's eliminations.
Second-generation racer Joey Severance of Spanaway, Wash., played the role of giant killer this weekend by taking the win in Top Alcohol Dragster with a 5.462-second, 249.90 mph run in the final. Competing in only his second event, the rookie racer held his composure like a veteran, defeating heavily-favored Mark Hentges in the final on his way to his first career win.
"I was a little bit nervous in the final, but not too much," said Severance. "It's a great feeling to be able to win my first event, especially at my home track."
The Top Alcohol Funny Car final was delayed, as Bucky Austin and crew were forced to install a new motor into their vehicle 35 minutes before the final.
"I knew I shook the car hard in the semifinals," said Austin. "I thought there would be something wrong."
After swapping out motors, the Fife, Wash., resident then ran a 5.691-second, 246.75-mph run to defeat Jason Rupert of Anaheim, Calif., in the final. This is Austin's third win this year.

Kent, Wash. - Mark Hentges in Top Alcohol Dragster and Bucky Austin in Top Alcohol Funny Car battled fluctuating track conditions throughout both days of qualifying at the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event at Pacific Raceways, but enter tomorrow's eliminations at the top of their classes.
"If it can stay in the 70s, racing conditions will be ideal. They've got good air here," said Austin, driver of the Centennial Batteries Northwest Energy Top Alcohol Funny Car. "When the track gets hot, it's hard to negotiate."
Hentges, of Federal Way, Wash., held pole position throughout all three rounds of qualifying. His second round pass of 5.408 seconds, at 258.27 mph is nearly a tenth of a second better than Joey Severance of Spanaway, Wash., who is seated second.

"We'll take it one round at a time tomorrow and try not to outsmart ourselves," said the Lucas Oil-sponsored Top Alcohol Funny Car racer.
Rupert will be competing in the Northwest Division this year, after competing last year in the Pacific Division.
"The team and I want to win every event," said Rupert. "But if there is one event we will especially be pushing to win, it's the Lucas Oil NHRA Northwest Nationals."
Both Hentges and Austin, as well as Tom Tucker of Bend, Ore., in Comp; Bill Stewart of Marysville, Wash., in Super Stock; and Calvin Queahpama of Warm Springs, Ore., in Stock; will earn bonuses from Sealed Power for being the top qualifiers in their respected classes.

Friday Qualifying:FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Local favorites on top after day one
Kent, Wash. - After the opening day of time trials and qualifying at the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event at Pacific Raceways, Mark Hentges in Top Alcohol Dragster and Pat Austin in Top Alcohol Funny Car are leading their fields.
Hentges' 5.537-second, 251.91-mph pass put him atop of his class after one round of qualifying. The Federal Way, Wash., resident had five divisional and three national event wins last year on route to a second straight Northwest Division championship and second place finish in the national point standings.
This year, he has been to three final rounds in four events, but has yet to visit the winner's circle. Two of the losses in the finals were to Steve Federlin of Oregon City, Ore., who is currently fourth.
"It's a little tricky out there," said Federlin. "But we made a good solid run, we're in the show, and we should be ready to play tomorrow."
Austin, of Tacoma, Wash., is qualified number one after a 5.894-second, 243.24-mph pass, while Bill Stewart of Marysville, Wash., is the top qualifier in Super Stock. Final qualifying results for Comp and Stock will be posted as soon as they are available.
Joe Collette, of Boise, Idaho, is atop of the Sportsman Motorcycle class after day one of NHRA Kerker Motorcycle Series qualifying. This racing series is held in conjunction with the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series in NHRA's South Central, West Central, Northwest and Pacific divisions. Qualifying is based on reaction time.
During round two of Super Gas time trials, Raymond Ayers of Dallas, Ore., had the scare of his life, as his roadster went out of control 400 feet past the starting line, eventually crashing into the right guard wall before rolling over one and a half times. The Super Gas racer was uninjured except for a seat belt abrasion on his left shoulder.
Smoke filled Maureen Jondahl's '92 Firebird shortly after she passed the finish line during the Comp racer's second qualifying run. The Firebird then began spinning out of control before coming to a halt two hundred feet later. Jondahl of Battleground, Wash., was emotionally shaken afterwards, but walked away from the scene with no injuries. Track medical officials cleared both racers after examination.
Gates open tomorrow at Pacific Raceways at 7 a.m., with final qualifying and time trials to begin at 9 a.m. Top Alcohol Dragster will make two qualifying runs at noon and 3 p.m., and Top Alcohol Funny Car will run at 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. General admission with pit pass is $20, children 6-14 are $5, and children 5 and under are admitted free with a paid adult.
