Ignitor Opener battles elements to conclude racing action

Boise, Idaho - Rain forced eliminations to spill over into Monday morning at the 32nd Annual Napa Auto Parts Ignitor Nitro Opener presented by Lithia Ford of Boise. Although racing concluded in Top Alcohol Dragster, Top Alcohol Funny Car, and Nitro Slugfest on Sunday, ten racing class categories were forced to wait until Monday to determine a winner.

Racers earning wins at Firebird Raceway include: Steve Federlin of Oregon City, Ore., in Top Alcohol Dragster; Bucky Austin of Fife, Wash., in Top Alcohol Funny Car; Bob Lambeck of Northridge, Calif., in Comp; Jeffrey Lane of North Bend, Wash., in Super Stock; Jody Lang of Puyallup, Wash., in Stock; Dick Vandermeer of Nampa, Idaho, in Super Comp; Wayne Linder Jr. of Sunnyside, Wash., in Super Gas; and John Dalrymple of Sunnyside, Wash., in Super Street.

Jon Riedel of Marysville, Wash., earned the win in the Wyoming Ethanol Top Comp class; and Leeland King of Shelton, Wash., took the win in the newly sponsored NHRA Kerker Motorcycle Series.

Other winners include Ricky Ruiz of Sparks, Nev., in Nitro Slugfest; Kelly Oliver of Boise, Idaho, in Super Pro; and John Keppinger of Ontario, Ore., in Pro.

Northwest Division competition of the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series will make its next stop at Mission Raceway Park, in Mission, B.C., Canada on May 3-5.

Hentges and Austin top qualifiers going into tomorrow's eliminations

Boise, Idaho - After the second day of qualifying at the 32nd Annual Napa Auto Parts Ignitor Nitro Opener presented by Lithia Ford of Boise, Top Alcohol Dragster driver Mark Hentges and Top Alcohol Funny Car racer Bucky Austin took top qualifier honors.

Dragster pilot Hentges, of Federal Way, Wash., made a 5.618 second, 248.07 mph pass during qualifying today, to take top qualifier position away from Steve Federlin, of Oregon City, Ore. Austin's 5.983 second, 242.00 mph pass during Friday's qualifying round, held through today's Top Alcohol Funny Car qualifying and was enough for the Fife, Wash., resident to retain the top qualifier position going into tomorrow's eliminations.

Hentges will looking for his third straight win tomorrow at Firebird Raceway, while Austin will be looking for his second straight victory at the track.

Top qualifiers in other classes are Bob Lambeck of Northridge, Calif., in Comp; Harry Holton of Modesto, Calif., in Super Stock; Marka Gallina of Henderson, Nev., in Stock; Don Harter of E. Wenatchee, Wash. in Top Comp; and Brett Hordemann, Spokane, Wash. in Motorcycle.

Gates at Firebird Raceway open tomorrow at 8 a.m., with eliminations set for 9 a.m. Top Alcohol Dragster and Funny Car eliminations begin at noon. The special feature AA/Nitro Fuel Altered Slugfest will run at 2 p.m. For more information call Firebird Raceway at (208) 938-8986.

Federlin & Austin top qualifiers after day one of qualifying

Boise, Idaho - Northwest Division competition of the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series opened its season today at Firebird Raceway, at the 32nd Annual Napa Auto Parts Ignitor Nitro Opener presented by Lithia Ford of Boise.

The cool weather provided ideal racing conditions, as several NHRA national performance records could possibly be broken tomorrow during competition.

"We have approximately nineteen record runs that are waiting to be backed up tomorrow," said Mike Rice, NHRA Northwest Division Director.

After one round of qualifying, Steve Federlin in Top Alcohol Dragster and Bucky Austin in Top Alcohol Funny Car are leading the fields.

Federlin, of Oregon City, Ore., made a 5.644 second, 247.52 mph run to put him ahead of his competitors. While Fife, Wash., resident Austin, took the top spot with a 5.983 second, 242.00 mph run.

Second in Top Alcohol Dragster qualifying after a 5.645 second, 249.79 mph pass is Mark Hentges, two-time Northwest Division champion from Federal Way, Wash. Hentges earned the win last year at Firebird Raceway on the way to a second place finish in the national point standings.

Top qualifiers in other classes are Bob Lambeck of Northridge, Calif., in Comp; Harry Holton of Modesto, Calif., in Super Stock; Marka Gallina of Henderson, Nev., in Stock; Don Harter of E. Wenatchee, Wash. in Top Comp; and Brett Hordemann, Spokane, Wash. in Motorcycle.

Gates at Firebird Raceway open tomorrow at 8 a.m., with final qualifying and time trials scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. Top Alcohol Dragster and Funny Car qualifying is at 1 and 4 p.m. Firebird Raceway will also feature a AA/Nitro Fuel Altered Slugfest at 2 p.m. For more information call the track, (208) 938-8986.
