FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Silver Dollar Raceway hosts NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racers

REYNOLDS, Ga. - NHRA's Southeast division will continue its 2002 NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series at Silver Dollar Raceway, May 31-June 2. The event will feature more than 400 drivers in eight racing categories including 260-mph Top Alcohol Dragsters (TAD) and Top Alcohol Funny Cars (TAFC).

In TAD, defending division champion Michael Gunderson is in the lead, but Jason Cannon and Tony Bartone are on his heels. In TAFC, Von Smith currently has the lead over defending division champion Jay Payne. These two competitors seem to be picking up where they left off last year when Payne finished just 16 points ahead of Smith.

Gunderson, of Middleburg, Fla., had to go out of the division, to Memphis Motorsports Park in Tennessee, to get his first divisional event win. Gunderson has yet to make a final-round appearance at a Southeast Division race. Cannon, also a resident of Middleburg, Fla., is just 16 points behind Gunderson with a win at Orlando Speed World Dragway in Florida. In third and fourth place, respectively, are Manhassett, N.Y., resident Tony Bartone, and Art Gallant of Boxboro, Mass. Bartone took the win at the Division's last event at Montgomery Motorsports Park in Alabama, and Gallant won the season-opener at Gainesville Raceway in Florida. The winner of this weekend's event could be in a position to take the points lead.

With two runner-up finishes and a win, TAFC driver Smith has a jump on Payne. The Oak Ridge, Tenn., resident won in Orlando and was runner-up in Montgomery. He also took runner-up honors at an out-of-division race. Payne, of Upland, Calif., has one win on the season, at Gainesville Raceway.

Gates at Silver Dollar Raceway open at 9 a.m. Friday and qualifying and time trials begin at noon. TAD and TAFC are scheduled to qualify at 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. When racing is over, the track will host a concert by Snakes in the Woodpile.

Saturday, gates open at 9 a.m. and racing continues at 10 a.m. TAD and TAFC will make two qualifying passes, at 2:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m., and begin first round of eliminations at 6 p.m.

Sunday, gates open at 8 a.m. and eliminations for all classes start at 10 a.m. Welcoming ceremonies are scheduled at noon.

Adult tickets are $15 Friday, $20 Saturday, and $15 Sunday. A two-day pass is $30 and children under 12 are admitted free with a paid adult. Military personnel with a valid ID will receive a $5 discount.

The event is part of a 45-race, $6.5 million series contested across the country. Drivers are competing for a part of a $561,000 champions' purse. They will earn points leading to national and division titles as well as a berth on the team that will represent the Southeast division at the Jeg's Allstar event in September.

The track is located on State Highway 96, just west of US Highway 341. For more information call Silver Dollar Raceway, (478) 847-4414, or visit www.SilverDollarRaceway.com.
