Kosky and Manzo leading fields
Numidia, Pa. - Nearly 460 cars raced down the quarter-mile during the second day of qualifying at the RBS Trailer Sales Thrills in the Hills NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series race at Numidia Raceway.
Mike Kosky of Cuddy, Pa., is leading the Top Alcohol Dragster field after a 5.649-second, 254.23 mph run. This is the second time this year that the dragster pilot has qualified number one at a Northeast divisional event. The first time was at Maple Grove Raceway earlier this year, where he was runner-up to Cliff Bozzelli of Absecon, N.J. Kosky may have an opportunity for payback tomorrow if both racers advance to the finals.
A win tomorrow by Bozzelli would make him number one in the nation in the point standings in his class. The New Jersey racer has three division championships to his credit and will be looking for his first national championship this season.
"If we can pick up a win this weekend, we have a good shot of doing well this year," said Rich Bozzelli, crew chief of the Bozzelli Racing team.
Frank Manzo continued to lead the pack as he has all season in the Top Alcohol Funny Car class as his 5.798-second, 250.62-mph run, made him the top qualifier going into tomorrow's eliminations. The seven-time national champion has earned wins at six of eight events this year, while taking home wins at all four divisional events in the Northeast division.
In pursuit of the Morganville, N.J., racer is Michael Ferro of Stanford, Conn., as he is qualified number two in his new Top Alcohol Funny Car.
"It went down pretty nice. We'll see what happens tomorrow," said Ferro. "I'd like to get to the final tomorrow, but we have to get past the first round. It's always the toughest round to get past."
Top qualifiers in other categories were Don Stratton Jr. of Beloit, Ohio, in Comp; Joseph Scott of Sunbury, Pa., in Super Stock; and Mike Farrell of East Nassau, N.Y., in Stock.
General Admission for the final day of racing at the RBS Trailer Sales Thrills in the Hills is $20, with children 11 and under admitted free with a paid adult. Gates open at 8 a.m. Eliminations will start tomorrow at 9:00 a.m., and round one of Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car are scheduled for noon.
