Kenny Bernstein

The office of Kansas Governor Bill Graves and Lieutenant Governor Gary Sherrer has announced that Thursday, May 23 will be Kenny Bernstein Day throughout the state of Kansas.

The Governor and Bernstein have one thing in common, as they are both preparing for retirement. Bernstein is celebrating his season-long farewell tour, called "Forever Red, A Run To Remember," and will turn over the driving duties to his son, Brandon, after the 2002 NHRA POWERADE Drag Racing season. Governor Graves also is preparing for retirement as he is in his final term of office.

"It's an honor to have Governor Graves proclaim Kenny Bernstein Day and it means a lot to us," Bernstein said. "We met Governor Graves last year during the NHRA's 50th anniversary celebration and established a rapport with him. We both joked that 2002 would be our 'retirement' years…my final year in the cockpit, his final term in office.

"We're very humbled that he would proclaim a special day for us."

Bernstein, who will be in Kansas next week for the 14th annual O'Reilly NHRA Summer Nationals at Heartland Park Topeka, May 23-26, is the only driver to win a championship in both the Top Fuel and Funny Car categories.

NHRA President Tom Compton said the honor bestowed upon Bernstein is a fitting tribute to what the veteran driver has contributed to the sport.

"Kenny Bernstein has long been an ambassador for the sport of NHRA drag racing," Compton said. "It is a testament and fitting symbol to his life-long commitment to the sport that the governor has bestowed the honor of a Kenny Bernstein Day throughout the state of Kansas."
